nanoActiv®

Activ Energy’s flagship technology: an engineered nanoparticle dispersion deployed for hydrocarbon recovery uplift. Developed by Nissan Chemical Corporation; commercialized in the Americas by Activ Energy.

Nanoparticle

A solid particle in the 1–100 nanometer size range. nanoActiv® particles are in the 12–15nm sub-range.

Wettability

The tendency of a rock surface to preferentially adhere to one fluid (oil vs. water). Determined by contact angle.

Brownian motion

Thermal-driven random motion of small particles in fluid. Drives nanoparticle transport in static pore-network water.

Pore throat

The narrowest part of a connecting passage between two pores. Typical pore throats in unconventional rock range 50–500nm.

EUR

Estimated ultimate recovery. The total cumulative production a well is expected to produce over its life.

BOE

Barrel of oil equivalent. Standard unit aggregating oil + gas + NGL on a heating-value basis.

Decline curve

Production rate vs. time for a well; shape captures geology + completion + reservoir behavior.

Re-stimulation

Treatment of an existing well to restore or improve production; nanoActiv® is one of several re-stim approaches.

New completion

First-time completion of a newly-drilled well; nanoActiv® integrates into the original frac fluid plan.

Enhanced oil recovery (EOR)

Production techniques (water flood, polymer flood, chemical EOR, gas injection) used after primary recovery.

Cohort analysis

Comparison of treated wells against statistically-comparable control wells. Activ’s primary method of validating field results.

Control well

An untreated comparable well used as the baseline against which treatment effects are measured.

Operator benchmarking

Comparison of an operator’s performance against basin median and cohort peers, used to identify uplift opportunity.

Candidate screening

Activ’s pre-deployment process of evaluating individual wells / pads for nanoActiv® fit.
